In classical mythology, the phoenix greets the dawn by bathing in a freshwater spring and singing an extraordinarily beautiful song. So pure and mesmerising is its melody that the sun god Helios (or in later versions, Apollo) halts his fiery chariot to listen, pausing the sun's journey and prolonging the dawn.
