The ancient world had a very different notion of pausing time to our current, sci-fi/movie inspired concept of freezing time. In ancient Greece and during later Hellenistic traditions, the sun god Helios —and later Apollo— was responsible for the passage of time as the personification of the sun. His journey across the heavens in his chariot was the sun moving across the sky. Pausing his journey stopped the sun’s progression, and therefore time itself, but life carried on as normal — time just stretched out.
